Dolok Sanggul is a small town that lies within the heart of Sumatra, on the southern shores of Lake Toba, an awe-inspiring volcanic crater lake, and anchors the classic “Lintong” region of the island’s coffee production. In Lintong, small producers grow coffee on their lands, and take their harvest into nearby town centers to sell to local mills. The mill owner we purchased this lot from has built relationships over time with certain growers from higher altitude areas, which produce cleaner, higher quality coffees. The mill maintains these coffees separately and uses advanced sorting practices to produce this highly unique cup.
The result is classic Sumatra character, rustic and bold in its expression of cedar and herbaceous aromas, which melt into graham cracker sweetness in the cup.
EVER SINCE I STARTED BEING INTERESTED IN REALLY GOOD COFFEE AND LIVED NEAR FLAVOR CUP IN GREENWICH VILLAGE WHICH ROASTED SMALL BATCHES OF GOOD BEANS, I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF SUMATRA. THE ORIGINAL PEETS SUMATRA DARK ROAST (I AM TALKING DECADES AGOI WHEN PEETS WAS A SMALL ONE STORE OUTFIT) MADE MY LOYALTY TO THE REGIONS COFFEE EVEN STRONGER.
NOW I DO DRINK OTHER ORIGINS AND HAVE REALLY LIKED MNANY OF THE CHOICES AT IRVING FARM, EXCEPT SUMATRA WAS NOT ONE OF THEM. NOW IT IS, IT EMBODIES WHAT IS SO APPEALING ABOUT SUMATRA GROWN BEANS AND I AM HOOKED ONCE AGAIN.
THE ONLY CAVEAT IS THAT I AM A COFFEE DRINKER AT BREAKFAST - NOT ANY OTHER TIME, SO THE ROBUSTNESS OF SUMATRA IS ESPECIALLY APPEALING.
