In Italy, an espresso is defined by 4 things, sometimes referred to as the "4 M"s: Machina, Mano, Macinazione and Miscela. In English these translate to Machine, Hand, Grinder and Blend. This blend, named for the viscous sweetness we've achieved, is a twist on a traditional Italian espresso blend, and we find it comes vividly to life when applied to the Macinazione, Mano and Machina. Soft, sweet Brazilian coffee serves as the base and gives the espresso its rich, velvety, heavy mouth-feel. We use the Latin American to add complexity and just a touch of acidity to keep it lively on the palate. Finally, the Yirgacheffe is added for sweetness and citric aromatics.
We love the way this espresso dances with layers of aromas and flavors, all announcing themselves in the thick viscous crema. Blackstrap is especially well suited to traditional combinations with milk, whether you prefer a small, more coffee-focused cappuccino, or the the sweeter, creamier cafe latte.

Just wish it were sold in my area.
Sitting here this Saturday morning enjoying a yummy cappuccino drawn from the last handful of beans from my first 12oz bag I picked up a week ago, I now have to sort out how I'm going to manage this new addiction! Perhaps my local coffee roaster won't miss my regular purchase as I consider driving 40 miles to Irving Farm in the city. Can I afford such a premium coffee, a healthy 30% more in cost? How do I limit myself to two doubles a day? How long will it take to ship? I could have worse challenges. I'm going ALL-IN!!!
If you're looking for a consistent espresso that has no pungent after taste and has a smooth sienna color and texture then Blackstrap Espresso from Irving Farm is the one.
the roast is a little bit what you would usually find in espresso beans. The taste and consistency are amazing. I even used these beans with a coarser grind to make drip. It was fantastic. One of the best espressos i've had.
We've been enjoying using the Blackstrap espresso in our machine. Makes a crazy good macchiato. So glad to have found you guys!
This is a beautiful shot with very good light-weight.
I am constantly in search of espresso to home brew, with emphasis on iced lattes. Blackstrap compares really well with some of the best I drank in Italy and in Israel. Strong (or should I say hearty), but just right, with edges of sweetness--syrupy goodness.
If you really like Black Cat Intelligentsia or Counter Culture Toscano, this is better in my opinion. And now it's right there in your local Whole Foods. If they don't carry this specific variety, ask for it!
I could not be more pleased with my recent purchase of Blackstrap Espresso from Irving Farm. I received the meticulously packaged beans just three days after they were roasted. The espressos made with these beans were the best I have had. It appeared there was a solid 1/8 of an inch of crema (the most I have ever seen), and the espresso was so rich, creamy, and satisfying, I had a rare third cup this morning. My quest for the best readily obtainable coffee is over.
Like everything about Blackstrap, particular its rich creme mouthfeel and carmel/chocolate aftertaste after the initial jolt.
Am taste testing my way around North American roasts trying to replicate my favorite barista in Roma. Have been a Stumptown Hairbender drinker for years, but Irving's Blackstrap and Forty Ninth parallel Old Style Espresso are as flavorful and a touch more to my liking.
