On the eastern side of Peru’s Andes mountains lies the district of Chanchamyo. Here, the slopes descend into the Rainforest, where the climate is characterized by dense pillows of fog and heavy rainfall. In this high elevation jungle they receive between 1500-2000 mm of rain per year. The combination of rainfall, lush jungle soil and elevation is ripe for coffee production, as the elevation drives out coffee-unfriendly pests while the plants still receive healthy amounts of water. You can almost sense the flavors in the coffee as a direct translation of the environment--a heavy, full body with aromatics that are reminiscent of foliage.
Cooperative Agraria Cafetalera La Florida (CAC La Florida) was formed in 1966 to give the producers in this area a means to gain access to markets for their coffee and other products like chocolate, pineapples, and bananas. Over the years their work has increased food sustainability in the region, encouraging farmers to maintain livestock, bees, and other food crops. Coffee, however, is their main crop, and this one is an excellent example of their capabilities. CAC La Florida also works with their producers to ensure they use the best agricultural practices; since 2006 they have increased their organic-certified coffee production by 30%. The cooperative is also Fair Trade, and Bird Friendly certified.
This coffee is certified USDA Organic, meaning its production did not involve the use of synthetic substances such as most pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
Available for limited times in small quantities, our carefully curated micro-lots are single origin coffees at their purest. Not only are the beans sourced from one farm, they're sourced from one micro-lot of land on that farm, ensuring a highly consistent flavor and experience. This is a wonderful way to sample the true, amazing potential of coffee. We've selected these lots despite their small quantity because we see something in them that's truly special--and we think you will, too.
True to their name, single origin coffees consist of beans sourced from a farm or community in one, specific region. Seasonal selections from around the world, our line of single origin coffees focuses on the highest quality product from coffee producers who take their work as seriously as we do.
Handcrafted from exceptional single origin coffees, our signature blends are carefully developed in our Hudson Valley roastery to please drinkers day after day, year round.
